Product Description
Procurement Technical Specification
Portable Composite Hazardous Substance Identifier — Model MR-AIMS
1. Scope

This specification sets the mandatory technical, performance and documentation requirements for a portable hazardous-substance identifier. It applies to toxic industrial chemicals and other highly toxic volatile compounds in ambient air.

It may be used as a purchasing schedule or as the technical annex to a tender. The supplied item must be a self-contained handheld unit. It ships complete with battery, charger, case, documentation and operator training.

2. Abbreviations
Term Meaning
IMS Ion Mobility Spectrometry
TOF Time of Flight
RIP Reactant Ion Peak; the reference peak used to normalise the spectrum
TIC Toxic Industrial Chemical
ppb Parts per billion (volume)
IP Ingress Protection, per IEC 60529
3. General Description

The instrument must draw air in with an integral pump. It must produce a mobility spectrum and compare it to an on-board library.

On a match, it must display the substance identity and class. It must raise audible and visual alarms within the times in Section 5.

The core must use time-of-flight ion mobility with a dual micro-drift tube design. Both polarity modes must run at once. No polarity switching is permitted.

4. Normative References
  • IEC 60529 — enclosure protection (IP code), for the declared IP67 rating.
  • National rules on transport, use and decontamination of detection equipment.
  • The manufacturer's user manual and maintenance manual supplied with the unit.
If this specification conflicts with manufacturer documentation, this specification governs. Any deviation needs written acceptance by the purchaser.
5. Mandatory Technical Requirements
Ref Requirement Required Value
MR-01 Measurement principle Ion Mobility Spectrometry (time-of-flight)
MR-02 Resolving power on the reactant ion peak ≥ 28
MR-03 Sample introduction Active pump suction, integral
MR-04 Warm-up to ready ≤ 12 minutes
MR-05 Continuous operation, normal temperature ≥ 10 hours
MR-06 Continuous operation, low temperature ≥ 6 hours
MR-07 Operating temperature range −20 °C to +45 °C
MR-08 Storage temperature range −40 °C to +55 °C
MR-09 Ingress protection IP67
MR-10 Max. dimensions (L × W × H) ≤ 170 × 110 × 62 mm
MR-11 Max. mass, battery included ≤ 1 kg
MR-12 Sensitivity class Trace level, ppb range
MR-13 Alarm response: Group A — phosgene, organophosphorus compounds ≤ 15 seconds
MR-14 Alarm response: Group B — sulphur- and arsenic-containing compounds, hydrogen cyanide ≤ 20 seconds
MR-15 Alarm response: SO₂, H₂S, NO₂, NH₃, formaldehyde, benzene, chlorine, HCl + 50 others ≤ 30 seconds
MR-16 Library capacity ≥ 60 substances, expandable
MR-17 Alarm annunciation Audible and visual, simultaneous
MR-18 Operator interface On-board display with identification and class
MR-19 Portability Single-operator handheld, wearable
MR-20 Substance coverage Industrial toxics, odorous gases, high-toxicity volatile compounds
6. Verification and Acceptance

Compliance is shown by manufacturer type-test records and witnessed acceptance testing. Testing takes place at the factory or another agreed site.

  1. Baseline: start in clean air; the baseline must stabilise inside the stated warm-up time.
  2. Endurance: measure warm-up and running time against MR-04, MR-05 and MR-06.
  3. Response: measure alarm time from sample intake for representative substances in MR-13 to MR-15.
  4. Resolution: read the RIP resolution; record against MR-02.
  5. Construction: verify dimensions, mass and ingress protection against MR-09 to MR-11.
  6. Documentation: check all Section 7 deliverables before signing acceptance.
Acceptance testing with high-toxicity compounds needs licensed facilities and authorised staff. Where that is impractical, accept certified type-test records for MR-13 and MR-14. Limit on-site checks to representative industrial gases.
7. Documentation Deliverables
Item Requirement
Data sheet Current issue, English, matching the configuration.
User manual Start-up, sampling, interpretation and alarm handling.
Maintenance manual Care schedules, consumable replacement, fault diagnosis.
Certificate of conformity Declares compliance with Section 5.
Functional check record Pre-delivery results for the supplied unit.
Packing list Instrument, battery, charger, case, consumables, documents.
Warranty document States the period and claims procedure.
8. Training Requirements
  • Operator training: start-up, sampling, interpretation, alarm response, after-use care.
  • Maintainer training: routine service, consumables, fault diagnosis.
  • Material in English; delivered on site or remotely as agreed.
  • Refresher training available for staff joining after delivery.
9. Packaging and Delivery

Each unit ships in a protective case. The battery is installed or supplied separately. Charger, inlet consumables and the Section 7 document set are included.

Packaging must resist shock and moisture in transit. Labels must show model, serial number and library configuration.

10. Warranty and After-Sales Service

Warranty period, service response time, spare-part availability and consumable terms follow the supply contract.

The supplier must confirm in writing that service and spares remain available for the declared service life. It must also confirm that library updates can be supplied after delivery.

Specify library composition, operator numbers and consumable stock when ordering. These items affect price and lead time.
