The MR-AIMS detects and identifies trace hazardous gases in ambient air. It uses Time-of-Flight Ion Mobility Spectrometry (TOF-IMS). The result is laboratory-grade discrimination in a unit one person can carry for a full shift.
Most gas sensors only show that a threshold was crossed. The MR-AIMS goes further. It resolves the mobility signature of a sample and matches it to an on-board library. The operator learns what the substance is, not just that something is present.
That difference drives every next decision. It sets the respirator, the exclusion zone, the decontamination route and the re-entry call.
The platform serves teams that cannot afford ambiguity: hazmat crews, customs officers, public-security units, refinery safety staff, fire investigators, environmental officers and public-health responders.
An internal pump draws air into the instrument. Molecules are ionised in a reaction region. A short ion pulse enters the drift tube. A weak electric field pulls it towards the detector.
Clean drift gas flows the other way. Large ions collide more often and arrive later. Small ions arrive sooner. The arrival pattern forms a mobility spectrum.
A reactant ion peak (RIP) is the internal reference. It normalises every other peak against shifts in temperature and pressure.
Mobility depends on mass, charge and collision cross-section. The spectrum therefore acts as a fingerprint. Resolving power is ≥28 on the RIP. Sharper peaks mean fewer overlaps between similar compounds.
Most handheld IMS units use one drift tube. They switch high-voltage polarity back and forth to scan positive and negative modes. Each switch costs time. A target in the un-scanned mode stays hidden until the cycle returns.
The table groups key targets by confirmed alarm time. Library contents can be tailored to your threat list or process.

Refineries, container yards and burning structures destroy bench analysers. The MR-AIMS housing is sealed against dust and temporary immersion. It can be wiped down after exposure. Its band covers freezing nights and hot interiors.
The low-temperature battery rating reflects real capacity loss in cold. At about 1 kg, the unit is worn or holstered. Both hands stay free. Warm-up of 12 minutes or less lets a crew power up en route.
